The 39-year-old Bloemfontein father, who attempted to commit suicide after he allegedly assaulted and strangled his child this week, is currently in police custody and will appear in court soon.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, confirms that on Tuesday night, 26 November 2019, the suspect assaulted and strangled his 11-year-old child in their home in Bayswater. Makhele says the child sustained numerous injuries to the eyes and the neck area. Reports indicate the child was taken to Universitas Academic Hospital for treatment. OFM News’ Olebogeng Motse reports the 39-year-old man attempted to harm himself by slitting his wrists after the assault.

Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, confirms the suspect was admitted to a local hospital following the suicide attempt. He underwent psychological evaluation this week and was revealed to not be suffering from any mental illnesses. Covane says the suspect is currently detained at the Bainsvlei police station and is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.

A domestic violence incident of assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm was opened at Bayswater Police Station, regarding the incident. OFM News reported previously that photos of the child have been circulated on social media, with some users attacking the suspect by writing messages on his Facebook page.
